Sequential unit shipment growth in all SSD segments – client SATA, client PCIe, Enterprise SATA, SAS, and PCIe – resulted in significant increases over the prior quarter. Client modules, targeting the OEM PC market, jumped almost 20% Q-Q, reflecting both a slightly healthier PC market as well as continued attach rate growth over HDDs. Client drive form factor (DFF) shipments also rose from the prior quarter – while not keeping pace with the module market, DFF shipments increased an impressive 9% Q-Q. Combined, modules and DFF client SSD shipments totaled 33.69 million units, or a 14% sequential boost.
In the enterprise SSD world, PCIe units leaped a spectacular 101% from CQ2 ‘16, mainly due to emerging demand from hyperscale customers. Both SATA and SAS posted growth with 6% and 14% increases, respectively. With these strong increases, total enterprise SSD shipments reached 4.56 million units.
